1. Helping Tibetans, Helping the World.
Since the exodus of the Tibetan people from their nation, Tibetan
religious and philosophical ideals and commitments to loving-kindness,
compassion, forgiveness and peace have inspired people around the
globe.
In these war-torn, troubling times, the world needs an example
of how to live in peace. The Tibetan community in exile fills this
need, exemplifying the qualities of generosity, peace and forgiveness,
dedication to preserving ancient wisdom, and an openness and rational
approach to modern scientific and political issues.
Despite tremendous suffering faced by those living in Tibet and
those who escaped to India, the Tibetan people remain filled with
tolerance, patience, and compassion. Their perseverance, light-heartedness,
and kindness despite great suffering serves as a great bolster for
these values worldwide.
Its impossible to work with the Tibetan people without being touched
by these inspiring qualities. Preserving this culture isn't merely
helping the Tibetan people, it is helping the world.
2. Response to Human Rights Violations.
Since the Chinese annexed Tibet in 1950, many religious, political,
and social rights have been restricted. For the past fifty years,
thousands of Tibetans have risked their lives (and many have lost
their lives and/or become physically handicapped) crossing the Himalayas
to reach the safe haven of India. They come in hopes of escaping
persecution, to obtain an education, to freely practice their religion
and to be close to their spiritual leader His Holiness The Dalai
Lama. This new life offers hope not only for themselves but also
for sending financial support to their families, who they may never
see again, who are struggling to survive at home in Tibet.
3. Help that Lasts
The Tibetans have a stable residence in India and a willing and
diligent effort to better themselves and their community. The Indian
government has graciously given Tibetan communities parcels of land
on 50 year lease, which have since been renewed, and both the Indian
and Tibetan governments are stable enough that social service projects
can be rendered in a functional, effective, and lasting way.
With programs supported by LHA, Tibetans have a means to educate
themselves and work for their own self-sufficiency. LHA supported
programs provide the building blocks, resources, and instruction
for local Tibetans to better their own situation and gain skills
to benefit themselves, their families, their community and the world.
